The Assassination of the Archduke

World War I began in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, in Sarajevo. The event itself is well known. Much less familiar is the personal history of Franz & Sophie.

Greg King’s book Assassination of the Archduke: Sarajevo, 1914, and the Romance that changed the World introduces the reader to a world of a decaying monarchy, fairy-tale castles, rigid and ridiculous court protocol, and a blossoming romance between its heir and a young countess.

2014 is the centennial of WWI. Assassination of the Archduke reminds us that those involved were real flesh and blood people who didn’t get to live “happily ever after”.
