Daniel Handler, the author who wrote the A Series of Unfortunate Events books under the pen name Lemony Snicket, turns to young adults in this novel of first love. Min, the film-obsessed narrator, is writing a letter to her ex-boyfriend. The letter explains the items in a box that she’s returning to him. Each item holds a memory of their relationship and presents a small case for why they broke up. However, it won’t be until the end that you’ll really learn the truth. Aside from the breakup, it’s a charming read involving made-up movies and actors described in such detail you feel like they have to be real.
Illustrator Maira Kalman provides beautiful visuals of the objects in the box. While it is written for young adults, older adults too could enjoy this look at fragile, young love.
